Lifestyle Habits for Sinus Wellness

Did you know that your daily routine can either strain or support your sinus health? Although there are some factors we can’t control that impact our sinuses—such as the dry, Scottsdale air and allergens—there are various, easy lifestyle factors that we can either tweak or adopt to maximize sinus wellness.

Stay hydrated

Prioritizing hydration every day is essential for bodily function, and in this case, it keeps mucus thin and moving. Aim to have eight or more cups of water per day, and try to drink extra cups if you’re spending a lot of time in the desert or exercising. There are foods that you can eat which add to your overall body hydration. Consider adding vegetables and fruits to your diet like: lettuce, cucumber, celery, strawberries and melon.

In addition, consider setting up a humidifier indoors, which can add moisture to the air and prevent sinuses from acting up.

Learn nasal hygiene

Implementing a daily saline rinse or spray helps to flush out allergens and irritants. At the Sinus and Allergy Wellness Center in Scottsdale, we recommend the Neil Med rinse and/or any similar generic store brand of the nasal rinse. You can use the rinse as much as you want throughout the day, but it’s essential to use it before and after air travel, exposure to allergens, germs, and when in dry climates. Use distilled or boiled tap water to reduce the risk of water borne infectious diseases.

While Afrin can work wonders on clearing up the nose, ensure you’re only using it two days in a row. It can lead to addiction, even causing significant worsening of breathing issues!

Eat for sinus health

Interestingly, what we feed ourselves can make or break our sinus health. Be sure to choose anti-inflammatory foods, like leafy greens, forms of omega-3s, and turmeric. Some people with sensitivities might need to avoid mucus-producing foods, like dairy and processed sugars. Lastly, stay mindful of food allergies or sensitivities.

Limit environmental triggers

As best as you can, manage indoor allergens such as dust, pet dander, and mold. Choose HEPA filters and clean your bedding regularly. Additionally, monitor Scottsdale pollen counts and reduce outdoor exposure when these pollen counts are high.

Exercise your body and breath

If you need another reason to exercise, we have it! Moderate activity improves circulation and sinus drainage, so don’t deprioritize your workouts when your sinuses need clearing.

Breathing exercises can promote relaxation and airflow. Setting time aside for breathing exercises can be a great addition to your sinus routine, and you can even incorporate nasal breathing during exercise to strengthen airways.

Final thoughts

Small, daily habits can make a big difference in sinus wellness. However, if you’re experiencing persistent sinus pressure, infections, or nasal blockages, it’s time to visit your medical team for assistance. At the Sinus and Allergy Wellness Center in Scottsdale, we can conduct in-office evaluations, allergy testing, and explore long-term sinus relief options, like balloon sinuplasty.
